The walls were a dull gray color, and in the middle of the empty room was a table with two chairs positioned on each side of the table, almost as if some sort of interrogation was about to happen. Sitting on one side of the table was an older gentleman, he has gray hair, wears a white lab coat with a clipboard in hand and is easily recognized as one of Gotham's finest and that man is none other than Dr. Jeremiah Arkham. With a audio recorder in his left hand, he speaks into it getting everything ready for whatever he has planned.
"We are getting ready to talk to subject 49703, Dr. Jonathan Crane who has been admitted to the asylum based on the fact that many believe he has gone insane. Friends, family and even coworkers have been worried about his mental health and we here at Arkham Asylum hope to treat him and put him back out into society."
As the door opens up behind Jeremiah, he turns to see three guards bringing in a younger man who is handcuffed and chained very well due to the fact that he is considered dangerous. Walking over to the table, the guards put Mr. Crane into the seat as Jeremiah places the tape recorder onto the table and takes a seat right across from Crane.
"If you would, please tell us your name?"
As Jeremiah asked Crane a simple question, he watched as his head turned to the side.
"You know exactly who I am but to oblige to your questioning, my name is Jonathan Crane."
Jotting down a few notes, Dr. Arkham stops and then looks up at Dr. Crane -- he continues to speak to him, from one doctor to another.
"If you would Mr. Crane, please tell us why you are here!"
Taking in a very deep breath and then letting out a big sigh, it was clear that Dr. Crane was annoyed; he didn't feel that he belonged here but others seemed to believe that he did.
"Well Dr. Arkham, you know exactly why I am here but I know exactly what kind of protocol that you are performing right now so I will oblige to you. You see, it was about a week ago when everything suddenly decided to take a turn for the worst."
"No, please -- don't do it!"
The cries and begging of innocent people never mattered, especially not when you were a doctor trying to understand just how the human brain operates. The room was dimly lit, the outer portion of the room was engulfed in total darkness but the operating table that was positioned in the middle of the room had a nice, large light that beamed down onto the young man who lied on the table, begging for this not to happen. Leaning over the young man was Dr. Jonathan Crane who was very interested by the human brain, he always wanted to learn more and he was a very hands-on doctor.
"I understand that you are afraid, I really do but answer me this young man -- how does one get over his fear if we do not know how the brain operates?"
Upon saying that, Dr. Crane lightly taps the scalpel on the forehead area of the young man who has tears streaming down his face.
"What you don't understand is that I am a Doctor who is trying to cure all of these fears that you people have. So, how am I supposed to do that if I don't get a closer look on how your brain operates when you are subjected to the fear?"
Pressing the scalpel against the man's forehead, blood begins to trickle and run down the side of the man's head as we return back to the room where Jeremiah is interviewing Dr. Crane, realizing that this was all nothing more than a flashback.
"So you believe that you can cure everybody's fear? I do understand that you are a very bright doctor Mr. Crane but I'm here to tell you; that is simply impossible -- nobody in the field of medicine has ever been able to achieve that and quite frankly, I'm not sure that they ever will."
Lowering his head and shaking it, he was in complete disbelief that Dr. Arkham was not interested in the same ideals that he was, especially being a Doctor who worked with crazies.
"That is why you are weak Jeremiah, you are not willing to take that extra step in figuring out what is wrong with the patient. All you do is lock us up, putting us in a padded room to ensure that we don't hurt ourselves and you medicate us, making us nothing more than mindless, drooling, babbling drones. Come on Jeremiah, I know that you are better than that because I know that you are a man of curiosity and haven't you ever wondered..."
With his hands clasped together while handcuffed, Dr. Crane leans forward with a very sadistic smile stretched along his face.
"... What it would be like to cure the world instead of simply medicating it? I'll tell you what Jeremiah, this little interview that you had planned? It's over, I'm finished talking until you want to talk business and that business is finding a cure instead of always shoving pills down our throats."
No longer speaking a word, Dr. Arkham motions with his right hand as the guards bring Crane to his feet and leave him towards the door. Upon exiting the door, Dr. Jeremiah Arkham grabs the tape recorder and stops recording. Leaning back in his chair, he rubs his eyes from underneath his glasses as the stress from this day has been pretty great, but I guess that's what happens when you are always dealing with insane people in the asylum.
