ABILITIES:
Like Batman, she has her own gadgets, though they have her own twists to them. Also due to her military background and training, she is very efficient in hand to hand combat. Also she is quite aerobatic, having trained in gymnastic from a very young age.
STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES:
Also like Batman, she is a daughter of Gotham and wishes to keep it safe. So she has a great drive in order to help accomplish that goal. The loss of her mother and twin sister were a very traumatic ordeal for her and can cause her to have pause, but is also one thing that helps drive her on. She is a former soldier, which has given her a discipline that few can match, but due to that, she can come off a little cold.
BACKGROUND:
Born into a military home, as her father chose to forsake the tarnished Kane name, both of her parents were in the US Army, she grew up as a military brat. She and her twin sister, Elisabeth, were used to moving from place to place where their parents were deployed. At age 8, her parents were stationed in Brussels, and their mother Gabi Kane had just given birth to a younger sister Bette. While on a family outing with the girls and their mother, they were all taken hostage by a terrorist group. Their father, Col. Jacob Kane caught wind of this and arrived on the scene but just a moment too late. Kate watched as her mother was brutally executed in front of her, and then her twin sister was caught in the crossfire as the military came in to stop the terrorist cell. Kate managed to keep the infant Bette safe by holding her close to her arms.
The incident of watching her mother and sister die so horrifically stuck with her as she grew up. Eventually, she followed in her parents footsteps and went into the military. She was well on her way to passing her way through West Point with high honors when she got caught up with an incident herself. Following the moral code instilled in her by her father's raising of her, she had no choice but to admit to her commanding officer that she was in fact...gay. Due to the DADT ruling during that time, she was immediately Dishonorably Discharged, but not before picking up various skills that would prove useful later, including hand-to-hand combat training and gymnastics. Her father was worried when she arrived home, but when she explained what had happened to him, he was proud of her for not compromising herself in order to get ahead. It was then she was told that her dad, Jacob, met a new woman and that they were getting married soon, making Kate another heiress to great wealth as her new stepmother was herself the heiress to the Hamilton Weapons legacy.
Kate had no direction after being thrown out of West Point, and tried to go to Gotham University but that did not prove beneficiary due to Kate's outlandish behavior. She just wouldn't settle down. Her nights of drinking and living up the high life were not conducive to her getting an education. So she was lost and had no real direction.
It was then that a moment changed her life for the better, out of something that could have gone so bad. Kate was walking home to her apartment when three masked men came up and tried to mug her. Using her unique skill set, she was able to subdue the would-be muggers with relative ease. After she had put the men out of commission, she looked up to The Batman looking down at her on top of the building. He left without saying a word, but the image stuck with her. After that, it got her mind running. Why not her? With her father's blessing, she spent the next three years training abroad, learning combat skills from every place she could. the US Navy Seals, British Special Air Service, you name it, she tried to learn under them. But as she was finishing her training and was on her way back to Gotham, she learned her father had died due to a quick onset of pancreatic cancer. She chose to continue to do what she could in order to help Gotham be a better place in both her mother and father's memory.
