ABILITIES:
Croc has suffered from an advanced form of regressive atavism. What that means is he has inherited some traits of ancestral species to humans. In his case, the more reptilian kind. Thanks to his regressive atavism, as well as an attempt to treat it with experimental meds, Croc has developed several abilities beyond that of normal men.
Armored Skin - Croc's skin grew to be hard and very much scale-like through his youth. After taking an experimental drug hastened the atavism, his skin hardened dramatically. Croc's skin is nearly invulnerable to abrasion and small weapons fire.
Advanced Healing Factor - When he is injured, Croc's reptilian traits have granted him a healing factor beyond that or normal humans. We're not talking re-growing lost limbs or anything, but he heals much quicker from wounds than people normally do.
Superhuman Strength - Naturally strong from bodybuilding in his teenage years, taking an experimental drug had an unforeseen reaction with the atavism. Croc's strength grew to about 10 times that of a normal man. We're not talking anything like Superman level here though. Think close to the level of Bane in the comics.
Enhanced Senses - Croc has a very heightened sense of smell. He can see almost as well in the dark and/or water as well as someone else can out in the sunlight.
Claws and Fangs - Embracing his name of "Killer Croc", he has filed his hardened fingernails into "claws". They rip through human flesh like knives. And no one is certain if his teeth grew that way or he had them filed the same.
STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES:
Strengths for Waylon, aka Killer Croc, are pretty much the above listed abilities, or "powers" if you will. As far as weaknesses go for Croc? Well that's a lil bit of a different story. The same condition that gave him the aforementioned abilities, has also been degenerative to Waylon as well. Over the years his mind and thought process has been devolving into a more animalistic state of mind. When he was young, Croc wasn't the smartest guy around but he was compentent enough to run his own protection ring. At this point he's mostly just hired muscle for Gotham's families.
Growing up with a condition that made him look drastically different from other kids his age led to him getting bullied constantly. This gave Croc an explosively short temper that was only magnified after a failed experimental drug worsened his condition. So in other words its possible to turn Croc into a massive rage monster that you can easily out-think. If you can stay out of his grasp long enough.
Much as the case with actual crocodiles, the most vunerable part of Croc's skin is his stomach. Also as is with his namesake, Croc can not breathe underwater. If he's in the water he will have to eventually surface to refill his lungs with oxygen.
BACKGROUND:
Waylon Jones was never going to have a "good" or "easy" life. Its almost as if he was destined from birth; maybe even from conception itself, to suffer. During the act of giving birth to her baby boy, Waylon's mother passed away. Mother never knew son. Son never knew mother. Nor, for that matter, did son ever know father. Seeing his son born with an obvious and hideous defect, Waylon's father bailed out on his newborn son. Care for the young boy fell to his aunt. Grief over the loss of her sister and stress of raising a special needs child took its toll on the woman. She gave into the seduction of the bottle, becoming an alcoholic and making the early years of Waylon's life harder.
Eventually the young boy was abandoned as well by his alocoholic aunt. He then became the state's ward and entered into an orphanage. Diagnosed with a form regressive atavism, the kid faced a terrible amount of bullying in school and the orphanage itself. This led to young Waylon taking up body-building as a way to defend himself. Turned out that a lot of times kids would leave you alone if you were a mountain of a man. It just so happened that around the time Waylon started lifting weights he started puberty. For most young boys this is a right of passage into manhood. It was something much worse for Waylon. As his body hit that big teenage growth-spurt, his regressive atavism went into overdrive. His skin began to harden, his senses became more sensitive, and his intellect seemed to diminish. The orphanage did what it could. They sent young Waylon to the best doctors in Gotham. He met with Thomas Wayne, to no avail. He even saw the famed Dr Elliott about the possibility of plastic surgery. Again it was to no avail. But then there came Victor Fries! He was a brilliant scientist that was on the verge of ground-breaking research. Victor would be the last shot for Waylon Jones to have anything resembling a normal life.
The orphanage had to petition the state to pay Fries' charges for researching a cure for Waylon's atavism. To the bets of anyone's knowledge; Victor Fries tried the very best to solve Waylon's problems. Alas the experimental drug had the reverse of its desired effect. It just seemed that fate was truly against Waylon. The drug's negative reaction with his atavism hardened his already scaly skin to inhuman levels. He was already physically strong due to his working out, but his strength increased ten-fold! The young man's sense of smell became uncanny. And, unbeknownst at the time, his body's ability to heal was accelerated to on par with a reptile. With all these unwanted "gifts", it leads one to wonder if the reaction was truly accidental. We, or Croc, may never know.
Once he reached the age of 18, Waylon left the orphanage and went out into the world. Quickly he found more of the same treatment he'd already known his whole life. No one bothered to get to know him. They only saw his appearance and judged. It wasn't until, while wandering the countryside, that Waylon joined up with Hill's Circus. The members of Hill's Circus accepted Waylon for his uniqueness and for the first time in his life, the young man had a family. Waylon became a feature attraction where he wrestled live crocodiles and alligators. This lead to him gaining the nickname "Killer Croc". He was finally happy.
Happiness was fleeting for Waylon though, now known as Killer Croc. Though he became the feature attraction for Hill's there was stiff competition from Haly's Circus. They had a family of acrobats as their headlining act. As so often happens in all show-business, what entertained the masses one night was forgotten the next. It wasn't long until Hill's went out of business. And Croc became a bitter, lonesome soul again. He came back to Gotham and turned to petty crime. His mind continued to devolve and so he wasn't the brightest of criminals. In fact one of his first ever crimes saw him arrested by a young officer named Aaron Cash. When officer Cash was putting Croc in lockup, he made the mistake of poking fun at the behemoth that was Croc. In retaliation Croc bit off Aaron's right hand!
Croc was in and out of jail the next few years. He made a name for himself as excellent muscle and/or enforcer in Gotham's underworld. At various times he's worked for ever major player in the Gotham underground. However after Bane's failure at controlling Gotham, Croc found himself taken in by Roman Sionis, otherwise known as Black Mask. Roman treats him well and pays him even better. Add to that that as long as it doesn't interfere with Roman's plans? Croc is free to do as he wishes. This is one partnership that has the potential to last.
