Barbara Gordon was sat crossed legged in her usual spot near the end of her bed. Her father was downstairs where the smell of sausages and the sound of crackling bacon came drifting up to her bedroom. She heard her stomach rumble and whispered for it to shush. Her Dad had been busy recently. He never told her the details of the cases he worked but she knew they would be including the death of the Graysons and an apparent serial killer among others. It had meant that Barbara hadn't spent proper time with him in ages. Breakfast for Dinner was their tradition. If her Dad was absent for more than three days then his way of apologising was to cook Barbara's favourite Dinner: Breakfast!
Jim Gordon called up from the kitchen.
Jim Gordon called up from the kitchen.
"Five more minutes Barb! Could you set up please and thanks!"
"Yea, give me a sec."
"Now please!"
"Yea, give me a sec."
"Now please!"
Barbara groaned and side rolled off her bed. Grabbing the remote, she was about to switch off the TV she'd been watching when she saw Alfred. He was being interviewed by Vicki Vale. Barbara was surprised. Alfred had struck her as a relatively private man. Barbara turned up the volume and sat back on the bed.
"That's why you're here tonight Miss Vale. As you know, Master Bruce always was a fan of your honesty, even when you targeted him as a 'selfish, self-centred pig.' He found your writing articulate and truthful, which is why it was decided that you were the one that would break the news to the rest of the world. Feel honoured Miss Vale, this is a great victory in your career."
Barbara smiled. The Butler was concealing his playful teasing within a compliment. He really was a clever man. She was trying to remember how long it had been since she had 'entered' Wayne Manor and encountered the kind Butler. It was around a week ago and she hadn't heard from him since regarding the promises he had made about Ricky Grayson. Barbara had visited Ricky since at the orphanage. It had been pretty grim. She felt a strong need to get Ricky out of that place asap.
"Well.. I can't appreciate the honour unless I know.. what it is.."
"Very true. So in that case.. Miss Vale, allow me to relinquish the light and give it to the man who deserves it.."
"Very true. So in that case.. Miss Vale, allow me to relinquish the light and give it to the man who deserves it.."
It was at that moment Barbara Gordon's life changed forever. Events had already been set in motion that would alter the course of her future and this was the final touch of fate that would propel her towards her destiny. There was a sound of a door opening and the camera panned sharply to the right. Bruce Wayne walked into the room. Barbara felt her jaw drop to the ground. Bruce Wayne. The Bruce Wayne. He just...walked into...Bruce Wayne...HE'S ALIVE!? Barbara's mind was racing until...she stopped. How long had Bruce Wayne been back for? Had he...had he been in Wayne Manor the night she'd spoken to Alfred? Alfred had used the excuse of his age as the reason he couldn't have Ricky Grayson living at Wayne Manor yet there was the healthy Bruce Wayne. Barbara gasped from the figurative knife in the back. Alfred had played her.
"Barb! Please don't make me ask again!"
Barbara jumped up from the bed, hit the off button on the TV and stampeded downstairs. She burst into the kitchen as her Dad walked past, raising the pan of hot bacon over her head. He reached the table and turned to face her.
"Plate please sweetheart."
"Dad...something's happened. I have to show you..."
"Dad...something's happened. I have to show you..."
Running to the tiny TV in the kitchen, Barbara switched it on and flicked it onto the news.
"Soo.. Nightwing saved you!?"
"He did."
"And who was the other man?!"
"The Bat."
"He did."
"And who was the other man?!"
"The Bat."
