First of all, let me say thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit the site and apparently we've held your attention long enough to have led you here. With that said, let me map things out for you so you're on the same page as we are over what the purpose of this site is and what we're looking to accomplish.
GOTHAM IS BURNING is an advanced writing community, but ignore that label as we're welcoming to ANYONE who wants to try their hand at the site. We don't believe in turning anyone away that wants to participate in the activity as that's just cruel. As long as you make an effort, that's all we ask. If at any point during the site you feel overwhelmed with the writing ability of other members, please reach out to us and we'll do our best to make sure we figure out how to remedy the issue. Majority of the site has been around each other in one way or another for almost a decade, so we're considered a 'clique' of sorts, but we're always looking to branch out and network!
Nonetheless, GOTHAM IS BURNING is a Nolaverse based RPing site that takes place 3 years after the events of The Dark Knight Rises. Because we're in the Nolanverse, things get a bit tricky so stay wth me here as I try to explain what we consider cannon -- and what's not. Arrow [CW Show] would be acceptable because the show airs 3 months after TDKR. Despite no direct mention to Nolanverse, the style of the show would fit well with that Nolan did with Bat's movies. Man of Steel came out a year after TDKR and since it's been 2 years since the movie has been out, we'd consider that canon.. as well as The Flash [CW Show]. The only thing [at the moment] we do not consider acceptable is the upcoming Suicide Squad movie because of the changing of Batman and everything else Snyder is doing. Maybe we can find a way to work things in down the road, but for now.. Consider Arrow, The Flash, Man of Steel as canon. Everything else? Nope.
The site's goal is to expand the Nolanverse, to add new characters and continue stories of those already mentioned. What happened to The Joker? Did Harvey Dent REALLY die? Where's Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle? Did Alfred imagine that sight of Bruce and Selina eating at the table? These questions are those that we want to answer! We want to take what Christopher Nolan gave us and branch out, we want to expand his universe because of how awesome it is! The reason we decided to walk this path is because of how grounded the characters are and how challenging it is to take something as ridiculous as a man dressed in a green suit with question marks printed all over [The Riddler] and have him be dark, edgy and intimidating.
One of the major things we look for is how you 'Nolanize' the character you're interested in running. When I say 'Nolanize' I expect applications to be thought out and tried to be fit in with the world Christopher Nolan created for Batman. I want things as grounded as possible, but with that said.. supernatual aspects like Clayface's shapeshifting and Man-Bat's transformation can't be changed without damaging the character. I ask that you try and ground the character as much, but at the same time don't change what makes them special. Think how Nolan intelligently replaced Bane's venom with a mask that pumps a painkiller, it's smart -- it's different, but it's useful. Venom in the comics turned Bane from a regular man into a hulking beast, Nolan's version of venom kills all pain which allows Bane to continue to be a menace. If you need help with this process, please.. DM me and we'll work out the details.
The site, despite being named after Gotham isn't strictly about Batman, his allies and his rogue gallery. As long as it's a DC Character and you attempt to Nolanize it, we're good to go. If there's an overwhelming success for the character, I'll even create a special board for them so they can police their own area. I do ask that if you bring in someone other than a Batman hero/villain/civilian you incorporate them first through Gotham or Bludhaven, as Batman is pretty much 'the hero' of the world [in the Nolanverse] and we can move from there. For example, if you decide you want to run The Flash, have Barry Allen show up in Gotham and work out a criminal case, with his intelligence, there's no doubt he'd cross paths with Batman trying to solve a mystery and from there Batman would remember the identity and jot it down.. etc.
All and all, the most important part of it all is to have fun. Like I said above, we're a group of people for the most part that comes from a different area of RPing, but we can all get along and tell a new story, a legendary one. There's no reason why we can't bond as a community, yeah we played a different variation of the game, but in the end.. we're all in it for the same reason -- for the writing and to tell a great.. great story. If you've got any questions, do feel free to DM me [The Bat] as I am the Admin and my name is Jus.
Once again, thanks for checking out our site and we hope that you come along for the ride! As, the main question for the time being is.. We know Gotham is Burning...
.. will you save it, or add to fuel to the fire?!
